Apotheosis

I have a non-religious family and lived under a non-religious civilization for a long time. My perception of the world also strongly affected by the current science-technology era. Meanwhile, I always interested in various kinds of religious art and literature. As a result, the religious culture strongly influenced my aesthetic and ideology while I refused to become a religious believer. Such contradiction sometimes confused myself and made me feel hard to define my personal belief. There were many times I wish to have a belief, yet there isn’t a religion really fits me. From my perspective, progress in technology today is very similar to create and introduce new deities. Meanwhile, there is a very hazy image for the technology to be ‘something that can be worshipped by people’. Therefore, I decide to use technology to create a ‘god figure’ with temple according to my acknowledge and see the possibility of my expectation.

In general, the god seldom response to my prayers, or they just happen very slow. When I work on this project, I wish people to receive some feedback from ‘the god’. While the viewer stands in front of it, the light and flow of the particular will be change according to the environment sound. A camera capture the scene from behind. Any movement can drive the computer’s vision, and the scene of the movement will be reflected on the wall of the temple. The particular flow might change its color if there are more people walking by. Meanwhile, if the viewer decides to keep quiet, the temple will be more likely remains dark and silence. I covered up the figure’s face because I don’t want to define who the god is. I wish people could stand in front of the figure for some time, enjoy the time flow in light or dark, and think about our relationship to the one we believe in.
